Other power solutions:
  • Switched Mode 65W 12V@5.4A regulator: $120
  • Opus Solutions ATX Vehicle DC-DC 150 Watt Power Supply
As of 4/7/2003, an ITX 90W version of this power supply is scheduled to be released in May 2003.
It's a bit on the pricey side ($190), and I was originally not willing to wait until May anyway.
It also only has relay timings of 10 seconds, 20, 40, and 60 minutes.
Still, it is a cool unit and it gave me some ideas.
  • On 4/29/2003 I confirmed with http://www.mini-box.com that they *MAY* be coming out with a new PW-60 in 3-4 months that will accept 10-24V input and will have a built in shutdown circuit.  No specific dates or promises were made.
  • 180 Watt 1U +12VDC ATX power supply (the link is currently broken)
I wish I had seen this earlier; it would have changed all of my plans.
  • TARGUS Automobile 70W 12VDC Adapter
Looks cool, but this is a piece of crap for 3 reasons:
    1. It is not really 70W (it is 0-20V 3.65A max)
At 12V it is only 43.8W!
I wrote them about this and they insist that it is 70W
    2. Their PowerTips are proprietary and they refuse to provide documents/specs.
    3. I could not find a way to make my own PowerTip.
(I was expecting an internal resistance unique to each tip, but I found none)
  • RadioShack has a similar 60W version with selectable output in their stores.
They are much better about publicizing plug sizes and voltage ratings.
The unit is only rated at 3.75A Max Output though! :(
    It sells for around $69.00.
