Info:

Headset/Microphone Wiring (Male PS2/Mouse/Keyboard Cable)

Plans:
  • I have wired a Female PS2/Mouse/Keyboard plug to a 1/8" stereo phono cable so that I can listen to my MP3 player without the ChatterBox.
There is nothing fancy about this cable; I just wired a 6 foot stereo phono cable to the Head Left, Right, and Ground shown above.
  • I am building a new cable that adds Head Left and Mic for my cellphone, as well as a 3rd input to Head Right.
Head Right could be used for a radar detector, etc.
  • I installed a 12VDC accessory socket on my bike and bought the 12VDC Power Cord to wire to this.
  • Once I have all of the parts working together I will build a single cable that merges all of the wires in to one cable.
THESE ARE CURRENTLY JUST UNTESTED IDEAS!
Use these ideas at your own risk.

I will probably NOT be able to merge all of the grounds together
Legal:
  • Washington State: RCW 46.37.480 - Earphones
"No person shall operate any motor vehicle on a public highway while wearing any headset or earphones connected to any electronic device capable of receiving a radio broadcast or playing a sound recording for the purpose of transmitting a sound to the human auditory senses and which headset or earphones muffle or exclude other sounds. This subsection does not apply to students and instructors participating in a Washington state motorcycle safety program.

This section does not apply to authorized emergency vehicles, motorcyclists wearing a helmet with built-in headsets or earphones as approved by the Washington state patrol, or motorists using hands-free, wireless communications systems, as approved by the equipment section of the Washington state patrol."

So, go to the Washington State Patrol web site and cannot find any "equipment section".
However, I do find this page: http://www.wsp.wa.gov/business/email.htm

    So, I email equipment@wsp.wa.gov.
I get back a reply saying that there is no "equipment section", and the only motorcycle headphones that are approved are ones that cover only one ear.
(I will post the email response here next time I remember to forward the email to my home address)
    Well, that kinda sucks!
I have printed out the RCW and keep it in my backpack just in case a cop gives me a hard time.
I figure my chances are pretty good that they don't know the law requires mono headphones.
